Craig, you're always spot-on with your observations. I might also suggest that since all three are phases of the same stuff, it's tough to put a finger on who's dreaming whom, and when.
As for warming the commute, I would point toward your friendly neighborhood WWII surplus outfit, which may have electric suits used by bomber crews (turret gunners especially) that you can then modify for use with your 12V automotive system. Like an electric blanket, only manlier!

I like the idea you're perhaps suggesting that ice sleeps deeply, without dreaming. Running water dreams vividly, and vapor perhaps has lucid dreams.
